About Jennifer Lawton

Jennifer’s art is held in private and corporate collections including two large medical clinics (one in the U.S.) and a College in Canberra, Australia.  She exhibits her work in a number of galleries and art shows each year, throughout Ontario and Alberta. Jennifer won the “Mayor’s Purchase Award” for the City of Toronto in 2010, and that piece is now hanging in Toronto’s City Hall. She has published three books of her work and images of her art have been published in magazines, newspapers, journals, newsletters and websites.


Artist Statement
 
My oil paintings are based on my photographs which I take to emphasize the "up close and personal" aspect of nature, people and objects. They explore the ability of light to reflect and refract, creating both manipulated and representational images. I enhance some details and sublimate others, to create a "story" within the painting.
 
At the same time, exaggerating the size of my work so that viewers become interested, and indeed fascinated by it, is also an artistic goal. By doing this, the viewer will become an integral part of the object.  With flowers, people like to possess the blossoms, and tend to pick them to hold the fragile petals in their hands and smell their scent.  They want the beauty to be theirs. They can then be enveloped by an abstraction of the object. They can celebrate the elements and principles of design in a more visceral way.
